Wildlife & Eagle Cruises Year Round

 

Two-hour naturalist-guided cruise focuses on Bald Eagles, migratory birds, wildlife, geology and cultural history.  Don't forget to bring binoculars, camera, a hat, and a jacket.

Junior Ranger Program

Year-round on Saturdays:  12:30 PM to 1:30 PM

Meet at the Nature Center at 12:30 PM

Kids, join a Santa Barbara County Park Naturalist to learn about Cachuma Lake wildlife and earn a cool Junior Ranger badge. Parents you're invited to participate with your kids.
Your first assignment is to bring a bag of trash or recycling you have picked up around the campground. Children under the age of ten must be accompanied by an adult.

Fees: $2 per child plus $8 vehicle Park Admission.

 


 

Nature Walks

Saturdays:  10:00 AM to 11:30 PM

Meet at the Cachuma Lake Nature Center at 10:00 AM.

Santa Barbara County Park Naturalists lead an easy-paced 1-mile walk exploring the Oak Canyon Trail.  Discover native plants historically used by the Chumash Indians, lakeside waterfowl, and chaparral and oak woodland wildlife.

Fireside Programs

8:00 PM at the Fireside Theater

 - A fun and interesting one-hour natural history program presented by a Santa Barbara County Park Naturalist.

 most Fridays July 11 through Sep 5, and Saturdays July 12,19, Aug 2, & Sep 6

- Santa Barbara County Fire Department will present a fire safety program that includes Sparky the Fire Dog.

Saturdays June 28, July 12, July 26, Aug 9, and Aug 23

 - The Santa Barbara Astronomical Unit will present a slideshow of celestial events, with telescopes available for viewing the night sky afterwards.

Creepy Creatures of Cachuma Lake

Special guests offer close encounters with owls, bats, scorpions, spiders, and more. Witches will be lurking about with punch, popcorn and face painting too. Kids' Old Fashioned Fishing Day

13th Annual Cachuma Lake Nature Center Trout Derby

Saturday & Sunday, April 18 & 19, 2009        Rain or Shine

The Trout Derby is a benefit for the Cachuma Lake Nature Center, Inc. Guaranteed cash prizes will be awarded to lucky anglers. Pick up registration forms at the marina, Nature Center, front gate, or the General Store. Starting at noon on Friday, April 17, and Saturday morning, April 18, register at Derby Headquarters in the Recreation Hall. Registration Saturday afternoon and Sunday will be at the marina.

Kids' arts & crafts activities will be held at the Nature Center 11:30-3 pm.

A mini-yard sale with books and other treasures will be open from 1-3 pm.

The usual Saturday Nature Walk and Jr. Rangers program will be cancelled on Derby Saturday. 

$8 per vehicle Park Admission

Kids Learn Birds

Some Tues & Thursday next summer 2009, 9:00 AM to 11:30 AM

Two-day workshop for kids ages 8-15; learn the basics of bird identification, habitats, and how to use field guides & binoculars (provided). Time will be spent outdoors in the park, on a pontoon boat, & in the classroom. Cosponsored by Santa Barbara County Parks and the Cachuma Lake Nature Center. Limited space; registration required.

Fees:  $15 per child and $8 per vehicle Park Admission.

Elementary & Middle School Field Trip Activities

 

Lake Cruise

45-Passenger pontoon boat. Life vests provided and worn at all times. Excursions focus on the ecology of oak woodland, savannah, and lake habitats. General emphasis is on Chumash history and lifeways, wildlife observation including mammals and resident and migratory birds, plant life, and geology. These trips run year-round.

Length: 1.25 hours, with programs generally starting at 9:30 am.

Limit: Minimum 20*, maximum 45 people.

Cruise Fee: $5 for youth ages 4-12, $15 for adults.

Park Entry: $35/bus; $8/auto.

 

*Booking Requirement: Minimum of 20 people needed to make an exclusive Lake Cruise booking outside of general public cruise times— for small groups see “Wildlife and Eagle Cruises.” 

 


 

Nature Center

The Nature Center is a dream-come-true for curious young naturalists, scientists, and archaeologists. It offers touch tables, intriguing exhibits, games, and hands-on activities. Students use all of their senses to learn about Chumash history, settler history, geology, birds, animals, plants, and more.

Length: ½  to 1 hour

Nature Center Fee: None

Park Entry: $35/bus; $8/auto

 

NOTE: Bookings for just the Nature Center are limited to 35 people or fewer.

 


 

Nature Walk

This exploration takes us from a bird’s to an insect’s eye view of the oak savanna, oak woodland, chaparral and lakeside habitats, where we witness the intimacies of the web of life and emphasize adaptive qualities of organisms in our Mediterranean climate.

Easily observed are quail, woodpeckers, lizards, and bird and animal nests. We examine plants along the trail and those used traditionally by Chumash people.

Length: ½ to 1 hour Nature Walk

Fee: None

Park Entry: $35/bus; $8/auto

Limit: No minimum group size requirement. Large groups are divided.

 


 

How to Schedule a Field Trip & Other Relevant Information

  • Call the Naturalists’ Office at (805) 688-4515 Tuesday through Friday, at least 5 months in advance; short notice can sometimes work out.

  • Schedule a single activity or all, depending on your time and needs.

  • We offer programs Tuesday through Friday.

  • Age Groups: Programs are tailored appropriately to age group: K - 6, middle school,

  • Field trip length: 9:30 am to 1:30 pm when participating in all 3 activities.

  • Group size: We can accommodate up to 45 people on the cruise boat. For larger groups, we can do a “split,” with half on the boat while the other half attends the Nature Center and Nature Walk; after lunch, the two groups switch.

  • Adult to child ratio: 1 adult to 10 children

  • Parking Fees: Park Use Fee: $35/bus; $8/auto.
